Masonry/Brickwork: Lining constructed from shaped refractory products, including bricks or blocks.

Masonry base: The base of the brick layer or the surface of the arch.

Brick layer: Each horizontal unit of straight and ring brickwork, or each arc-shaped unit of arched brickwork. Generally, the height of the brick layer is used as the unit.

Straight brickwork: Straight walls, flat bottoms, or flat top brickwork with flat surfaces.

Flat layer: A general term for flat-laid brick layers or a combination of top-laid and longitudinal layers.

Header brick: In a layer or side layer, a brick whose length (side or large surface) is perpendicular to the wall, i.e., the end face is parallel to the wall.

Stretcher brick: In a flat layer, a brick whose length (side) is parallel to the wall, or a brick whose end face is perpendicular to the wall.

Header course: A brick layer laid with header bricks.

Stretcher course: A brick layer laid with stretcher bricks.

Side layer: A side-laid brick layer, including side-laid header layers and side-laid stretcher layers.

Side-laid header course: A brick layer with header bricks laid on their sides, i.e., the brick end faces are facing the viewer.

Side-laid stretcher course: A brick layer with stretcher bricks laid on their sides, i.e., the large surface of the brick faces the viewer.

Vertical layer: A vertically laid brick layer; a brick layer where the end face of a straight brick is placed on the horizontal brick base; in an arch or arch top, a layer of vertically thick wedge-shaped bricks with the small end face as the hot face placed on the arch surface; in an inverted arch, a layer of vertically thick wedge-shaped bricks with the large end face as the cold face placed on the curved brick base; in ring brickwork, a layer of side-thick wedge-shaped bricks with the end face placed on the horizontal brick base.

Furnace wall: The part connecting the top and bottom of an industrial furnace.

Front wall: The furnace wall adjacent to the working door, charging port, or operating platform.

Rear wall: The furnace wall opposite the working door, charging port, or operating platform.

Side wall: The longer wall in a rectangular furnace, the vertical wall in a circular furnace, or the wall below the arch foot of the furnace arch.

End wall: The shorter wall in a rectangular furnace, the wall facing the airflow, or the wall perpendicular to the front and rear walls.

Fire wall: A partition wall inside the furnace; a protective wall of the firebox.

Partition wall: A common wall between two or more chambers of a furnace.

Breast wall: The side wall of the flame space in the working chamber of a glass melting furnace.

Bridge wall: A partition wall inside the furnace (but its upper part connects the flowing gas); in a glass melting furnace, it separates the melting part (pool) and the working part

(pool) inner wall, the liquid flow hole in the bridge wall connects the melting part and the working part.

Suspended wall: A vertical or inclined refractory wall suspended by anchors.

Flat bottom: A furnace bottom with a flat masonry surface.

Full-paved carbon block bottom (blast furnace): A blast furnace bottom with flat-laid carbon blocks.

Vertically laid carbon block bottom (blast furnace): A blast furnace bottom with vertically laid carbon blocks.
